Methods Overview

The Center TRT in collaboration with our CDC partners from the WISEWOMAN and Obesity Prevention Programs and our National Advisory Board developed a process for reviewing and translating interventions.  The review process and the criteria and tools essential to the process are presented in the Methods section.

Translation model - describes the four-phase translation framework providing the basic steps the Center TRT takes to:

  1. identify and review evidence,
  2. create intervention templates,
  3. disseminate information, and
  4. integrate research into practice and practice into research.

The goal of the process is to identify, translate, and disseminate effective interventions that have been tested through research studies (research-tested) or that have been developed and evaluated in the field (practice-based).  Interventions recommended for review must target health, behavioral, environmental or policy outcomes that reduce risk for chronic disease, specifically heart disease, stroke, and obesity.

  • Research-Tested interventions - have had efficacy/effectiveness tested in one or more research studies and the findings have been published in the peer reviewed literature.
  • Practice-Based interventions - have evidence derived from practice in the form of evaluation data or reports and are reviewed for the outcomes targeted by the intervention, the evidence-base for the main strategies used and the theoretical models and logic of the intervention.

Both types of interventions are also reviewed for their potential public health impact (reach and feasibility) as well as the dissemination readiness of materials and implementation protocols.

Intervention template - communicates the essential information needed by practitioners to make informed decisions about the potential use of an intervention in their program.  A sample intervention template is provided with a brief description of each section.

Glossary - provides definitions of terms and ensures consistency in the language used in Center-TRT activities.
